Thank you, Lisa, for organizing these and looking through many past threads for pertinent info. That must have been a good chunk of work. It is a fantastic resource!

Added two links on misc enzyme deficiencies:

Added this to the Vaccination sticky:

http://www.naturalnews.com/030975_aluminum_vaccines.html

There is an association between contact allergy to aluminium and persistent subcutaneous nodules in children undergoing hyposensitization therapy.

Netterlid E, Hindsén M, Björk J, Ekqvist S, Güner N, Henricson KA, Bruze M.
Department of Clinical Sciences in Malmö, Faculty of Medicine, Lund University, Lund, Sweden. eva.netterlid@med.lu.se

BACKGROUND: The development of persistent itchy nodules at the injection site following hyposensitization therapy with aluminium-precipitated antigen extract has been described in several reports. Occasionally, contact allergy to aluminium has been reported in individuals with such nodules.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate if hyposensitization therapy can induce contact allergy to aluminium and examine if there is any association between persistent subcutaneous nodules and aluminium allergy.

PATIENTS/METHODS: Sixty-one children with allergic asthma and/or allergic rhinitis participated in the study of whom 37 had had hyposensitization therapy. The study consisted of a non-clinical part based on a questionnaire and a clinical part with a physical examination, self-assessment of itching, and patch testing. To secure an unbiased evaluation of possible reactions, the investigators were blinded.

RESULTS: Contact allergy to aluminium was found in eight participants, all in the exposed group (8/37 versus 0/24, P = 0.02). Examination showed nodules on the upper arms in 13 participants, all in the group exposed to hyposensitization therapy. Nodules were over-represented in patients with contact allergy to aluminium.

CONCLUSIONS: There was a statistically significant association between contact allergy to aluminium and persistent subcutaneous nodules in children who had had hyposensitization therapy.

doxycycline, the antibiotic that keeps on giving. I found this abstract about it's affects on mammary cancer:

Effects of doxycycline on in vitro growth, migration, and gelatinase activity of breast carcinoma cells
FIFE R. S. ; SLEDGE G. W. ;
Indiana univ. school medicine, dep. medicine, Indianapolis IN, ETATS-UNIS
The Journal of laboratory and clinical medicine

Metastatic disease is one of the major causes of death from cancer in human beings. Several enzyme systems have been implicated in the metastatic process, but the metalloproteinases (MPs) appear to be the major group involved in most instances of neoplastic invasion. Increased MP activity has been correlated with the metastatic potential of many cancers, including breast cancer. MPs also play a role in tumor angiogenesis. Tetracyclines are antimicrobial agents that can suppress MP activity in a variety of tissues, including gingiva, bone, and cartilage. Several reports have indicated that tetracyclines can suppress tumor MPs as well. A synthetic tetracycline, doxycycline, inhibits migration of human MDA-MB-435 breast adenocarcinoma cells through a reconstituted basement membrane (Matrigel), an assay used as an in vitro surrogate for the in vivo process of tumor invasion through basement membranes. Additionally, doxycycline diminishes the proliferation of this breast cancer cell line and also decreases its gelatinolytic activity, as determined by gel zymography

Update your bookmarks if you have the tick list info overview page booklinked. It's been moved, and the format changed a bit:
https://sites.google.com/site/tickbornediseaseindogs/

Also added to the ehrlichia section, an interesting case of E. Ewingii,
http://www.idexx.com/view/xhtml/en_us/sm...2case-study.jsf

This is not tested on the SNAP 4Dx. It appears that the only way to diagnose it is by direct visualization, or PCR, antibody tests, as far as I can find so far, are not available.

Two good mushroom products added to the cancer sticky, but I don't have any links handy.

Power Mushrooms, made by Health Concerns

Mycoplex-7 by Gourmet Mushrooms Inc, not as well tolerated as the Power Mushrooms for sensitive individuals, but a more complete mushroom formula.

I spoke with the director of the tick lab today and added a little note to the tick sticky, but wanted to place it here.

When blood is taken, when the platelets are clotted, it is usually attributed to a process that happens during the blood draw or processing (I can't remember the details).

However, if there is an Ehrlichia Canis infection, there is a protein in the blood from that that causes clotting, so that could be part of the disease process, and not the actual blood draw.

Since that's not widely known, I wanted to post it here too.

A vet on the tick list reported back from a webinar by Bayer about managing ticks. Nothing real earth shattering, bottom line, it's not easy. Here's the scary fact that I'm going to add to the TBD sticky:

*New pathogens are being found at almost the rate of one every 18 months - Ehrlichia and Rickettsia.*

I knew there were new ones, but that's more than I realized. This is yet another reason to treat the dog, not the test - there is no way we can test for all of these - it's a moving target frown

Off to add this to the tick sticky - a new TBD that is viral in nature:

Heartland Virus
http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2012/08/...red-in-missouri
http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1203378

Quote:
Two Missouri farmers have been infected with a brand-new tick-borne virus that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is calling the Heartland virus.

The men recovered but suffered serious illness that required hospital care and weeks of convalescence. Symptoms included fever, severe fatigue, headache and nausea. Their platelet counts plummeted, but even though platelets are necessary for blood clotting, the men didn't suffer abnormal bleeding....

...the new virus is in the phlebovirus family, which contains more than 70 members. And here's another twist: Heartland virus appears to be a cousin of another new human virus called severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus, discovered last year in China. Another possible cousin may be Bhanja virus, a little-studied virus that has been found in some mammals, birds and reptiles in Asia, Africa and Europe.

I was looking up some knee stuff, so I added the info to the Health stickies. Sad to say, a number of threads on this: http://germanshepherdhome.net/forum/ubbt...e_Pr#Post268147 (I might have become carried away with the links)

Wanted to point out this blog post, which I thought was interesting:

Added this to the Spay/Neuter sticky:

UC Davis Golden Retriever Study, 2/2013

Quote:
A team of researchers led by Dr. Benjamin L. Hart at the University of California, Davis has completed the most detailed study performed to date that evaluates incidence of cancer diagnoses and joint problems in one breed -- Golden Retrievers -- by neuter status: early (before 12 months old), late (12 months or older), and intact. Consistent with previous studies on the topic, the results showed increased likelihood of hemangiosarcoma, lymphoma, mast cell tumors, and canine cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture in neutered dogs.

The most profound observations were in hip dysplasia in male dogs when comparing early and late-neutering. The risk of development of hip dysplasia doubles, and disease occurs at a younger age in the early-neuter group compared to both the intact and late-neuter group. No occurrence of CCL disease was observed in intact male or intact female dogs, or in late-neutered females. In early-neutered dogs, the incidence of CCL was 5.1 percent in males and 7.7 percent in females, suggesting that neutering prior to sexual maturity significantly increases a dog’s risk of developing CCL disease. With respect to cancer, cases of lymphoma were 3-fold greater in the early-neutered males. Interestingly, incidence of mast cell tumors (male and female dogs) and hemangiosarcoma (female dogs only) were highest in the late-neuter group.

AKC Canine Health Foundation
http://www.akcchf.org/news-events/news/health-implications-in-early.html

Abstract

In contrast to European countries, the overwhelming majority of dogs in the U.S. are neutered (including spaying), usually done before one year of age. Given the importance of gonadal hormones in growth and development, this cultural contrast invites an analysis of the multiple organ systems that may be adversely affected by neutering. Using a single breed-specific dataset, the objective was to examine the variables of gender and age at the time of neutering versus leaving dogs gonadally intact, on all diseases occurring with sufficient frequency for statistical analyses. Given its popularity and vulnerability to various cancers and joint disorders, the Golden Retriever was chosen for this study. Veterinary hospital records of 759 client-owned, intact and neutered female and male dogs, 1–8 years old, were examined for diagnoses of hip dysplasia (HD), cranial cruciate ligament tear (CCL), lymphosarcoma (LSA), hemangiosarcoma (HSA), and mast cell tumor (MCT). Patients were classified as intact, or neutered early (<12 mo) or late (≥12 mo). Statistical analyses involved survival analyses and incidence rate comparisons. Outcomes at the 5 percent level of significance are reported. Of early-neutered males, 10 percent were diagnosed with HD, double the occurrence in intact males. There were no cases of CCL diagnosed in intact males or females, but in early-neutered males and females the occurrences were 5 percent and 8 percent, respectively. Almost 10 percent of early-neutered males were diagnosed with LSA, 3 times more than intact males. The percentage of HSA cases in late-neutered females (about 8 percent) was 4 times more than intact and early-neutered females. There were no cases of MCT in intact females, but the occurrence was nearly 6 percent in late-neutered females. The results have health implications for Golden Retriever companion and service dogs, and for oncologists using dogs as models of cancers that occur in humans.
