I am looking for a list of rescues in Virginia for my parents who are looking for a dog. I would like recommendations of good rescues and warnings about other to avoid. Please send the latter in a PM. My parents are experienced dog people, but are not young anymore and are also raising my 4 year old nephew. I need rescue/foster homes that screen their dogs very well.

Thank you,

I would contact Leah/screen name Remo from VAGSR. http://www.shepherdrescue.org/

I think she's like me - if we can find older adopters, we are all over them! smile

Sending you a PM as well.

ETA - wow, they have 3 pages of dogs - check out Meg!

There are others too of course, she just stood out in her write up.

My parents just lost a 9 year old dog to hermangio so my mom is really leery of another older dog. I think 5 is the age limit for them. I had noticed Meg. There was another one too that I told her to check out.

Awww, that makes sense.

I am going to guess that Lisa's parents with the small child won't want to foster, and of course the dogs can't go straight from shelter to a home. smile I think that she's looking for that good screening that all rescues should be doing and that some do better than others, particularly with matching.

I was talking to Meg's foster dad on Saturday and he claims she is one of the best GSDs he has ever met. Apparently she comes from excellent breeding, she is calm, friendly, well trained and everything someone would want in a GSD. He also said he is going to very picky about who gets to adopt her. She came in with the dog Boomer and he is supposed to be as wonderful as Meg is.

Thank you everyone. Meg sounds very nice. Wish she was a couple of years younger.

Can any of you recommend a lab rescue in the same area? That seems to be the direction they are leaning and there are quite a few. My father has decided that GSD are not cuddly enough. ????

Oh My Gosh! Aragon - the first dog on the link from Jean.

Be still my heart - it is good that dog is not around here or I could cave. I hope someone takes in him in and helps him live a great life. So many special needs dogs!
