I am looking to change Max's joint supplement, and I realized that we don't have a good, *single* sticky for joint supplements. I am hoping that folks will put their favorite joint supplements here, with links if posible, for a really good collection of favorite products.

I have been happy using Cosequin/Cosamin for Max, together with Hyaluronic Acid, which is what I also used for Indy. Max though does also get an Adequan injection at home every 3-4 weeks since he started with a low back issue that sidelined him for months. Both of these have worked well with his extreme allergies. However, with a recent spike in liver enzymes, I'm going to see if a supplement without manganese is more liver friendly.

This is the HA I've been using:
http://www.vitacost.com/Jarrow-Formulas-Hyaluronic-Acid

I think this HA worked well when I tried it, but upset his stomach when I tried it: http://www.trixsyn.com/

Vet gave me Dasuquin with MSM for Riley. She told me it's her favorite. I checked out Springtime supps and found the Dosuquin has more than double the ingredients as the Springtime.

We've been using Flexicose for Kaiser - he's just a little stiff when getting up after laying down for awhile and it seems to be helping. It's also good that he doesn't notice it added to his food since he's so picky! They package it for humans and for pets, but it's the same stuff.

Sam's Club glucosamine, for no particular reason. They don't really need it, but I'm being open-minded and giving it to them anyway.

Guess that doesn't really help though with the people who have dogs with problems. frown I will, however, be reading this for future reference.

I do 2 different things (for 2 different dogs) but am thinking I might switch both to the same.

For Jesse (14 yo) we give Springtime Longevity.
http://www.springtimeinc.com/product/longevity/dogs
(Which BTW is cheaper if you use the affiliate link here to Amazon then buying direct.)

For Dalton (11 yo) we use a product called Joint Resolution.
Because I'm an affiliate and re-seller of this product I'm not allowed by the company to post a link on a BB (they consider it spam which is strictly forbidden by this company.) You'll have to PM me if you want more info. wink

Here's a list of the ingredients for the Joint Resolution;
BioCell Collagen II
Hyaluronic Acid
Chondroitin Sulfate
Devils Claw Root
Boswellia
Dandelion Root
Licorice Root

I have used a couple of products. The one I've used the most is Nurpo Joint Support Supplement. I get it for my senior dog and there is a noticeable difference when she gets it, she's not as sore/stiff. I started adding it to my younger dogs food when he was about a year and a half old, I did his OFA hip/elbows at 3yrs old and he got excellent/normal. Makes me wonder if that helped at all?
Here is the link for Nupro http://www.nuprostore.com/nuprojointsup.htm

Right now I am trying Next Level Joint Fluid, it seems good. I also want to try Finish Line Joint Supplement, I have friends that use it and swear by it. I just think I have to get someone to bring it up from the US for me, everywhere I checked said we can't get it in Canada.

Hope it's ok to stick a question in here .. if your dog has been xrayed and found to not have HD is it recommended to still give this type of supps or do they not need them?

My opinion is that the damage starts occurring long before we can see any symptoms externally or with our diagnostics. Even dogs without HD eventually get arthritis, so this is something that affects all animals and humans, to some degree.

So, yes, I believe that there is benefit to supplementing with joint supps! Now, what age to start? That might be trickier. Max came here at 18 months and it was the first thing I did for him (after changing his food). His xrays (last year?) actually looked pretty good for a 10 year old GSD. Indy had fairly good joints until the end too, and she was started on supps very young (she did have HD).

To play devil's advocate - there is no research that proves early supplements prevent problems or arthritis, but thinking about, and finally agreeing with, Lisa's theory, I started mine on glucosamine when they were just about 5 years old in just that case of undetected problems. They are not toxic, so if further research eventually proves otherwise, my guys will have a headstart.

Sorry. I would really like to use the affiliate link, but if you are watching pennies a I do, it is cheaper at Springtime.

On the link it is $39.98. At Springtime it is $45 but I always buy 2 at a time and get a 3rd one free. So at Springtime $90 buys three and on the link it is $80 fr just 2.

Sorry for the hijack.

I 'think' Max cannot take Longetivity - it has "beef or pork liver." I think Lisa said he cannot have that, but I could be confusing him with someone else.

Of their supplements for joints, only their Joint Health Formula in powder form does not have liver and it does look like a good product-

www.springtimeinc.com/product/joint-health-formula-dogs/dogs

GUARANTEED SPRINGTIME ANALYSIS
per 1,800 mg serving
Boswellia serrata extract,65% 444 mg
MSM, 99% (methyl sulfonyl methane) 444 mg
Carrot powder 340 mg
Glucosamine HCL, 99% (shellfish extract) 318 mg
Chondroitin sulfate, min. 90% purity (cartilage extract) 254 mg
Ingredients: boswellia serrata extract(65%), MSM (99%), carrot powder, glucosamine HCL (99%), and chondroitin sulfate (min. 90% purity).

I've had excellent results with Dasuquin w/MSM. Mac's on it now and not doing bad for his age. My last group of old guys (Ringer, Honey & Kelly) also took it and it seemed to help them too.

Dasuquin with MSM is what Riley is taking and what both our vets highly recommended. I would really like to try the soft chews but after reading the ingredients - nooooo way. The soft chews have BHA and BHT preservatives in them, the chewable tabs do not -- at least according to the ingredients on the bottle I have. Darn the luck!

After reading Lisa's post I'm probably going to put Nissa on them, too.

Thank you for remembering! Yes, the pork *and* carrot are on his allergy list (luckily I've been able to feed beef lately).

Great input from everyone!

I have a friend using Synovi3 (?) and says it's not doing much - he's using a low dose, but wondering if anyone has had any experience with that one?

In researching joint supplements, I learned that it works on a building block system...each supplement being one building block in joint health. I use Dasuquin, Vit E, Fish oil....and Moj gets Vit C from his NuVets Plus and from the Cranberry he takes for his bladder.

Depending why you're using supplements you do need to add additional C. It works very well in high doses as an anti-inflammatory.

ok I"m going to throw out something completely off the charts:)

I wear magnetic bracelets for my tennis elbow, have a rotten ankle, and wear one on my ankle as well, I swear by them...Lisa, ever thought about a magnetic collar for Max?

If your interested in trying one, let me know, I"d be glad to make one for him, (I make them as well), let me know his neck measurement, (you don't want it tight, but not real loose)..we can experiment:)))

Diane, that is so thoughtful!!

And coincidentally, just the other day I dug out the magnetic collar I have for him, I had taken it off, and forgot to put it back on.

He wears the large size here: http://www.magnetictherapymagnets.com/magnetic-collar-lg.html

I do believe that it helps, I had one for Indy too.

A couple days ago a friend gave me this huge jar of Cetyl-M for Mac gsdsit along with a big jar of Dasuquin w/MSM. He's already taking the Dasuquin w/MSM but can he take the Cetyl-M along with the Dasuquin? I know Ringer used to take Cetyl-M but I can't recall if he was taking other supplements with it or not!!!

I used to give CM along with the regular joint supps, but the product that I used didn't have any other glucosamine in it. I don't recall if Cetyl-M has extra "stuff" in it. In general, it isn't going to hurt, but every dog is different!

Do these work as a preventative or just aid an existing problem?

Diane, you are soo cool! I will have to measure his collar!

Jan, I notice a lot freer "head tilts" when Max wears his collar. He does have chronic neck issues. I know with my magnetic mattress pad, it gives me a lot more energy, and if I wear my bracelet if my wrist is sore, it makes it unnoticeable.

Jan, I'll have to get a pic, the ones I made for my aussie, is basically just a big human bracelet type magnetic closure, using magnetic beads.

I doubt they are a 'cure' and from what I'm told, the magnet supposedly 'draws' out the bad energy, pain, I honestly didn't put much 'credit' to them, until I started wearing one for my tennis elbow, and I swear the pain disappeared within a couple days! I don't question the 'how' only that it worked on me, and seems to help my aussie who has some arthritis:)

Hey--can Rafi and I get in on this one? What about Cleo? Seriously, both of my 4 leggeds have major joint issues. Rafi wouldn't care what his looked like (his leash has bright red hearts ala teenage girl on it and he hasn't eaten it yet...) and Cleo's would just need to be as light as possible so that it didn't bother her. She used to wear a collar but was always scratching at her neck so don't know if it would work but her arthritis is so bad that some days I just wonder that she's moving at all.

Anyway, I'd obviously be reimbursing you whatever you think is fair.

I definitely want a blue one for Chance. His neck – measured for a perfect-fit collar is 22”. Would I get a 23” necklace?

I would like something in red for Beau. His neck – measured for a perfect-fit collar is 23”. Would I get a 24” necklace?

The only thing I think about is if they start to tussle, I don’t want either one of them to be able to get a foot inside the other one’s collar and pull.

They don’t wear collars unless we go out in the car somewhere, but I think these are lightweight enough that they won’t bother them.

Besides – they are gorgeous!

And I fully expect to pay for them! wink

Does wearing it around their neck help their legs? I thought the magnets had to be close to the joint?

Jan, is the 22/ on chance and 23 on cleo a "tight" fit..I don't do 'tight' fits, but not hanging a mile either..I don't leave Jynx's on when I know she's going to be fooling around,,I usually put it on her at night, when I know she's not going to be fooling around, and 'sleeping' :))

Actually I've worn them around my ankles as well, I have really bad flat feet and it' affects my ankles alot,

Honestly I can't guarantee they 'work', but they help me and Jynx:))

Ok Jan, let me know,,like I said, NOT tight, but probably your collar size, able to fit two fingers underneath them..

I will definitely send you the size! His regular collar hangs a bit, so I was messing with sizes, will make a commitment on the size tonight.

Can't wait for him to feel better!

I'm getting ready to change/add to Rosa's joint supplement, which is currently Glycoflex 3. She has been on it since she was initially diagnosed, so since early 2010 or thereabouts. With her funky elbow issue, I decided maybe she needs more than we are giving her. I have read this thread, plus taking info from the thread I have posted about Rosa's elbows, and come up with some ideas I'd like to run by everyone. I also want to add a multivitamin since we are feeding one meal a day (out of three meals) as a home cooked meal of chicken and eggs.

This is Don's work-up of what I suggested we do. And he added Niko on there since it couldn't hurt him to be on a joint supplement either, even though his hips and elbows are fine.

I didn't add any Vitamin C to the mix since two of the joint supplements already have Vitamin C in them. So you can see if we gave all of it to both dogs, it would cost us around $1000 a year, which is kind of shocking. I'd appreciate some feedback on this, what can I omit to reduce the cost a bit? Does it make sense to put Niko on the same supplements that Rosa is getting?

Thanks for any opinions!!!

The amount of C she's getting in her supplements isn't at a therapeutic level. I give 2200mg/day of Ester C in addition to what's in his supplements.

I have read so many articles about multivitamins not being worth it that I've stopped using them for myself or my animals. Instead I supplement with fresh veggies (dark leafy greens mostly). I puree them and toss them in the food.

I haven't added up the amount I spend on Rafi's supplements lately but it is a lot. I don't worry about the cost though because so far I've avoided having to get him surgery on his hip(s).

He currently gets the following per day:

3 scoops Springtime Inc. Longevity
4 Springtime Inc. Joint Health tabs
2200mg Ester C
1.5 tabs Only Natural Pet Get up and Go
2 gel caps Springtime Inc. Omega 3-6-9

Yes, dogs are expensive shocked I don't add up things here unless I absolutely have to, specifically for that reason...I don't want to know, and everything I add or do is for a specific reason. I think any new dog owner should be shown a lot of these costs though!!

I have always liked combining a Cosequin product with a Glycoflex product - the former is very precise and pure, the latter is more of a whole food supplement. I used to use the GF600 for Indy with regular Cosamin (human version, buy it at Costco on sale). She couldn't tolerate the other extras.

I do like adding HA to the mix, but the jointagen seems to have a lot of overlap. You might get away with a dedicated HA product like this: http://www.vitacost.com/Vitacost-Hyaluro...ng-120-Capsules . I had to use a different one, since the BioCell HA products are all chicken based.

If there isn't a problem with the joints, I think you can get away with the recommended amount, maybe even a little less. If there are significant problems, you often have to go higher than the recommended dosages.

I am a big believer in a daily multivitamin, for dogs on kibble, and also on a homeprepared diet.

The Ester-C you guys are giving is just the pills you buy at Walgreens? So if I get the 1000mg, I should give 2 pills per day?

He's currently getting the Annamet Endure which has
Green Lipped Mussel 1000mg
Glucosamine 1000mg
Chondroitin 700mg
Vitamin C 500mg
Psyllium husk 3000mg

Should I go ahead and add the Ester-C?

Emoore, I don't think I ever saw your last post here. Did you ever add the vitamin C?

This is the brand that Mom uses: http://www.ester-c.com/ and I've seen it at places like Walgreens and Walmart, though I get it for her in capsules at Costco. For the dogs, I've always used sodium ascorbate.

Hi Gayle, We have one in the Health Index. This sticky will be moved there too, I just forgot about it blush

Here's the DM sticky:
http://germanshepherdhome.net/forum/ubbt...erati#Post48612

It's with skeletal conditions, since many vets will just diagnose DM when it's other things.
