This is for anyone who wants to share here and advise if anything is being done medically or holistically. I hope you don't find it negative...I think we could all learn from these.

I was looking at some xrays that were posted with OFA results and thought I would start a place for the "other side."

I'll start with Buddy. He is 14 and has been a tripod for all but the first few days of his life.

Because he is active and well muscled, he is still mobile. I don't know how he does it. He recently had tramadol added to his rimadyl. The point at this time is to help him keep moving in order for the muscles to continue to hold his hip in place. frown

I took a picture of the screen with my kindle, so excuse the fuzziness, please.

Amazing how well Buddy is doing with those xrays! Great job bonnie!

Jazz had a VOM session the other day to try and release some of her muscle issues, is buddy still getting his sessions?

Alexis' 6 month prelims. She is pretty lame, but still hobbling around at 11. They were actually tighter at 1 year, but not by much.

We have some stoic dogs.

Lisa, I loved the vom treatments for Buddy, but about a year ago they stopped helping him. He enjoyed the attention, but there was no real improvement, so we stopped going. I was thinking of trying light therapy.

Ihczth, thanks for sharing. Is Alexis on on any meds at this time? Quite honestly, I am mainly using pain control for Buddy. He and Skye both have spine issues, as well.

No. She seems to adjust her own amount of exercise and if she were to look sore or act sore I would give her something then. She is pretty stoic.

These were Nara's prelims. I don't remember exact age but it was right around a year old. Already had arthritis showing at that time.

We were very fortunate with her as the predictions made by several vets that she'd be lame and need surgery within a year or two never came to pass and she made it to just a few months shy of her 13th birthday without her hips ever bothering her at all. I always wondered how bad they would have looked later in life, but wasn't curious enough to do x-rays just to find out.

Bonnie, I think it is incredible that he is doing so well with those x-rays and being a tripod. Definitely testament to the care you've given him. Just looking at the x-ray I'm amazed he's mobile. I guess it's a good thing that dogs don't look at those x-rays and think about how bad they should feel, and they just carry on.

Chris, thank you so much. Buddy is one tough dog and surprises me every day.

Wow, arthritis at 1 year old? But another dog that beat the odds and had a good, long life. Thanks for posting Nara's xrays.

Bianca,

I was hoping you would add Cooper's xrays. He is sure in my thoughts. Hopefully he will feel so much better soon.

This is Rusti's hip x-rays. I have been told they are the worst people have ever seen. She was diagnosed with hip dysplasia and arthritis in lower spine. Right now she is on Tramadol and I got her on 1500/500 EPA/DHA fish oil per day and she seems to be doing really well. Tried Deramaxx twice but each time caused problems with pooping.

This is an xray of my 7 month old female...bear. They have told me the only surgery available will just provide relief for a short time due to her still growing.

I just saw Rusti's xrays. I would definitely have him on some supplements that feed the joints, like glucosamine and chondroitin, with hyaluronic acid. Those hips are pretty bad frown

BearsMom, what they said about the surgery is wrong. For a total hip replacement, they do need to be fully mature, but that is not true for the TPO (in fact, it's opposite from what is true), and it is not true for the FHO.

Bears hip on our right, looks a lot like my Indy's looked like. It also looks like the body might be a bit rotated, not sure, but I don't think it matters, those hips are not sitting well in the sockets at all frown

My experience is that dogs will mask the pain until it's pretty unbearable. I was completely amazed at the things that Indy could do after her surgery, when we didn't even think she had such a huge problem, or was in pain. We were really really wrong. I actually knew something was wrong, but didn't realize that that was it.

Again I agree with Lisa, when I spoke to the specialist surgeon last week he said and TPO would have been possible if Cooper had been around the 6-8 month mark. Cooper had his first THR at 15 months so he wasn't fully grown by them either.

She has been on therapeutic dose of Dasuquin for a few months now. I haven't really seen any improvement with it. Got an appt scheduled for acupuncture and will also start Adequan.

With those hips, the joint stuff may not help the hips, but there is a lot of extra strain on alll the joints which are compenating, from the back to the neck, elbows, etc. So you want to keep those in the best shape that you can too.

I hope that the acupuncture and adequan help. Chiro always helps my dogs a lot too.

I got a second opinion for bear. This doctor said he wouldn't do the surgery until she was full grown and then he will max the weight at 50 lbs. Well bear is already 40 lbs. The only other option is to take her to an orthopedic specialist. I can only imagine what that bill will be. I don't know what else to do but take her there.

Did this vet discuss the three different main surgeries with you?

One probably really is cost. To me, the main question is whether or not you can afford two hip replacement surgies, each pretty pricey, and you can follow Cooper's thread to see what that entails.

If that is not something you can do (I couldn't), then you need to look at the other surgies and find a vet/specialist that knows all three well.

Thanks Lisa. She got her first Adequan shot this weekend. I'm really hoping it helps her. Couldn't get acupuncture until next week. I'm going to try a different glucosamine supplement as soon as I run out of Dasuquin.

Rafi gets:

InClover Connectin
Springtime Inc Longevity
Ester C
Springtime Omega 3-6-9 fish oil
Tumeric
egg shell liners

If I notice more stiffness or limping I switch out one of the top two for something different. I am often adjusting the combination of supplements and adding additional, where necessary. No one knows he has joint problems -- that's how well it works!

With Indy, I used to give Cosequin and the original glycoflex, and that combination worked great. The original glycoflex has alfalfa in it, which can be an allergen and might make some dogs bloaty, just as a warning. Indy did very well on it, as did other dogs that tried that combination. So, as with Ruth, you might have to mix and match to find the right combination.

I've had to stop my G&C supplements for awhile (allergy maybe), and developed all sorts of knee pain. I opted for some hyaluronic acid, and that has helped a ton. I'm using 2 capsules of the jarrow HA each evening (I have a history of knee issues).

I took bear to the specialist this week and got some bad news. frown The side that requires the TPO he will fix if he thought the other hip could sustain the weight of her body. The other side will require a full reconstruction. He won't do the reconstruction until she is full grown and he will not do the TPO side at full grown. Basically because both sides are bad, one being worse than the other, he won't attempt either. She is already in enough pain that she doesn't sleep well at all. frown

Oh, I am so terribly sorry to hear this! Please start another thread pleasejust about Bear's hip issues. Perhaps those more experienced with such things can offer guidance. I am so deeply sorry that Bear is in so much pain that she cannot sleep well. My compassion for what Bear and you are both going through. hugging I am sending Bear good thoughts.

Oh my gosh I am so sorry to read this. Is she on any medication for pain? I agree a new thread dedicated to this would be a good idea.

I'm a little confused as my Cooper (has now had two total hip replacements) but the first one he was only 14 months so certainly not fully grown at all.

And what did he say about FHOs? That sounds like the option here. There is still a weight bearing issue, but that way they can do the bad side first.

He didn't even mention the FFO's. There are only 2 surgeon's in GA that are specialists that come recommend. I guess my only option is to take her to another one.

Dexters 6 month X-rays. Not sedated. Thanks to another board started him on adequan, then glucosamine and fish oil. Using zeel if he looks a little stiff or has a long day running about. Not using any pain killers yet at 20 months old.
