Not sure what your vet meant, but 10% of German Shepherds are affected by the MDR1 gene. Purebred or mixed can have this gene. Here's a list of the breeds: http://vcpl.vetmed.wsu.edu/affected-breeds
And a list of the drugs that are a problem for an MDR1 dog: https://vcpl.vetmed.wsu.edu/problem-drugs

I would have never known Sammy had the gene until he got really sick from an Ivermectin injection right after we adopted him.

Testing is usually a cheek swab I think, but they do have a blood test now. Kris posted the link above with the most info.

IIRC, Kris' Sammie was the first non-white GSD they found with the mutation????

The drug company should be distributing this info with the drug frown

I wonder if the lab keeps a database of every dog tested where they could look up yours?

Just a side note - there are a lot of human mdr1 drugs which may or may not affect canines. Some of them have been tested, many not. With indy, I would always check to see if they affected humans if they weren,t on that list, and then went slow, or I emailed the lab. Indy was only a 1/2 mutant. People can have this too (I do wink )

I specifically emailed Dr. Mealey. She recommended against it for mdr1 dogs frown I wonder if a dose modification would work, like a chihuahua size dose lol.

Does Sammie have any neurological deficits?

Well, not from the MDR1 gene! rofl Seriously though, once he got past the recovery after that ivermectin shot, I've never seen any lingering effects. I'm really disappointed that Dr. Mealey advises against using it. I was going to email too - thanks for getting that answer! He doesn't need it yet, but was looking forward when/if he does and thought this was a great solution. Back to the drawing board...

Glad to hear about the full recovery!

Maybe by the time Sammie needs it, they will have tested it on canines. I guess they need the raw drug for testing and haven't been able to obtain it.

I figured since it was so new, they probably hadn't tested it yet. Thanks for info. Lisa!
