I think it is a red flag, my dog did well for a month on the darker kibble. after purchasing another bag and it was lighter like I mentioned 2 weeks later diarrhea. I am looking for another food. Something is not right with this lighter color one.

This is the second brand of dog food that your dog has developed diarrhea (or is it loose stools?) after eating for a few months. I'm also concerned that you are feeding lamb rather than a more standard meat. Long ago (I am ancient) I was told to reserve the specialty protein as something to go to if the dog developed issues with the standard (standards being chicken or beef).

Pup may have something more going on with his gut that causes the development of loose stools after a prolonged time on the same food.

All this aside, some dogs do better on some food than another food. Just another quick thought - how often do you clean the food and water bowls? In my house it is "seldom" but sometimes upping the cleaning and especially washing, not just rinsing out, the water bowls will take care of bowel problems.

I'm on a roll here - maybe I didn't mention this before but my eldest is a picky eater. She's offered food twice a day but prefers to eat late in the evening. She will often get both meals then and sometimes ask for more. If she eats too much more, she will have loose stools the following day.

Since middle covered a lot of things I was thinking here is another one. What food was the breeder feeding. I like to start with the same food they were getting at the breeder and work from there.

A big problem I see with owners of dogs with maybe a sensitive system is too many changes and moving too fast from one food to another. I had a female that had some food issues for a while, I decided to go with feeding her Homemade Beef and Rice until I knew her system was calmed down. Then I selected a food that was Beef and Rice based, I slowly added the kibble to the beef and rice and over time decreased the Beef and Rice. Until she passed away at 14+ years old that was the only time she had digestive problems. You need to go slowly with switching foods with some dogs.

HI middle, thanks for your response. I do wash water bowls.
and before he ate dr gary's he was one fromm but stools
were big and soft. as far as transitioning I did it very slowly. Over a course of a month. And everything was going good up until now. That's why I am confused. When I got him the breeder had him on purina pro plan I kept him on it until he was 1.5 old. I switched to wellness and he did fine but refused to eat it after a while then I put him on fromm. each time the transition went well. I hope I did not cause this from switching too much, I am very upset and worried. I don't have kids so he is my boy he is 3.5 yrs old.

Hi Lisa, I think you are right with this something is wrong with this new bag. I thought I was okay, buy 2 weeks into this new bag he has diarrhea. He is on bland diet for 3 days and is doing better. Should I give it back to him to see if diarrhea starts again to be sure or should I move on to something else?

I would see if I could take the bag back and get a different batch. IMO, this happens with many foods, I had it happen with an expensive script food once. Whether you change away from the food is more complicated, since finding a food your dog does well on may be tricky, depending on the dog.

Thank you Lisa, I just did order another bag so it should be here tomorrow, and I will see if it looks what the dog is used to. I also called the company again and no one called back yet. The last time I spoke to him he said to me "no one looks at kibble like you do" I told him when something looks very different you can't help but to notice it.
I also told him if you eat (just say) cheerios and you noticed it was very different in color would you eat it? he did say no I probably wouldn't.

Hi everyone. How is everybody doing? I have been busy so I haven't been on here. I wanted to ask I am feeding Vonn pro plan, I don't really like it but after his stomach episode his stools on this food is okay however, he has a lot of gas and he is shedding more than normal. I hate to change his food b/c I am afraid, but then again maybe I need to?? If so I was looking at Merrick classic dry. What do you guys think? The reason for the Merrick classic it's not really high in protein. If I go with grain free its way to high for him.

Shedding is the season. Great gobs everywhere.

Talk to your vet about something like gasx for the gas. One thing to consider is a farting animal is good in that their intestines are working. Gas that isn't passed is bad.

Why is high protein bad for him?

I guess I'm bothered by the frequent changes of dog food. You have the stools under control right now.

Every time I tried high protein he gets very loose stools. I agree, I hate to change foods b/c I don't know what is going to happen. I guess I was stupid before b/c I was reading how others rotate foods and claim it is good do to. However, I also read it is not good to do,that's the old school method. I suppose the old school is the best school.
