Neighbor dogs need control. Two weeks running they have not let people out of their trucks at my gate. They harass my dogs and me and never mind my horse... They charge up to my fence and up to my gate (which is recessed on my property.) My camera is slow (and so am I!) so I have not been able to get photos of them at the gate which is what I need to really press the issue legally.

To get this documentation, I need information on a video camera that I can post at the gate. The house is 300 feet from the gate so hard wiring isn't going to work. Any advise on what to purchase for this? There's got to be something out there. Maybe a trail camera?

(BTW neighbor has started cursing me out semi-regularly - he's on 5 acres across the road from my 10)(Lovely.)

Thanks. This afternoon I think I got what I needed with my old slow still camera. Will try for more as I track down the FedEx driver the dogs wouldn't let out and wait for my good neighbor who has had a problem with these dogs gets back in town. Trail camera does sound like the ticket though.

Well, more fuel. Before today, I knew that the dogs/dog had kept a FedEx driver in his truck for 10 to 15 minutes; threatened to bite a neighbor; concerned another contractor a couple of years ago. Today I learned that two weeks ago, one of the dogs gave my lawn guy a hard time when he went to get back into his truck after closing my gate.

This WILL be stopped.

Middle, I didn't get my camera's today it will be a couple of weeks, I guess it either didn't notice the shipping time or they were out of stock. OK I just checked it had Prime but with a notice that it required extra processing time.

I hope you can get this resolved.

Thanks Val, I may not be needing the trail cam. after all.

I managed to get a second still one of the dogs at the gate - for the record today at 7:29 AM PDT ;P . So I have one right after they were talked to about this and another three days later. It should be enough to do something with, especially when coupled with other incidents.

Well, the lens cover didn't open completely so I'll be in the "market" for another photo just in case. I think what I have will do but I should be able to get a better one. I'm disappointed because I was so happy with having the camera out and ready for this one. Third time is supposed to be a charm so we'll see.

I guess I wasn't totally clear on this mess. July 5 I started dealing with the sheriff's office about this. They said it would be best if I got photos of the dogs ON my property. So that's what with the surveillance, photos, etc.
I worked on nailing down days that people were accosted by the dog(s) yesterday and was getting ready to submit this or call and see what they wanted to do with it (cops not neighbors).

Wellll, after the last "nailed it" shots were funky because of a lens cover that didn't open fully, tonight I did get some good ones. I've delayed going to the cop shop with this latest and I guess that's why (that I would get better photos). Didn't get everyone at the charge but got clear shots of two unarguably where they weren't supposed to be. SD will be so pleased that his discussion with the fine neighbors did little good. (he will not be surprised but I am sure that they are hopeful the fools will listen sometime).

Once I deliver the goods I know that sonny boy will resume cursing me at the top of his lungs.

Middle I just got the Trail Camera and set it up yesterday. Had it pointed higher than I thought but the Woodpeckers on the wooden electrical poll triggered the camera, lol had beautiful shots of the poll and the sky. But at 8 mg pixels (can go higher) the pictures were really clear in the day time. Got a black and white picture of my cat's face at night. I had 645 pictures and the card wasn't full. I had it set that once it was motion activated to take a picture every 30 secs. This little darlings can be used as security camera's also, pictures can be date and time stamped.

It sounds like you are making progress on the situation. I would think about getting a cheap MP3 player recorder and record the sonny boys harassment, in some states there are laws against that type of harassing.

Thanks Val.
I'll look into the MP3 player. I have a what is now ancient recorder but although small for the time, it would be awkward to tote around (especially when I'm loaded down with poop bag, not the tiniest camera and my flip phone -- need more pockets!)

Overall update:

Talked to deputy minutes ago. Will get a hold of him tomorrow and sign for them to be fined. I read him the part of the statutes about "dogs at large" which says they can be sited (or is it cited?) if they are away from property from which the owner can lawfully exclude others. I indicated that although we are on a private road, I didn't think they could exclude anyone from it. If they could, the other neighbors would join me in excluding certain two residents. So something will be done.

I will be looking into the MP3 player because I somehow suspect that I will be cursed for this. Ah well.

OK got deputy (not first but second one) out yesterday. Amazingly stressful just bringing this action. Didn't anticipate that. Now I need to let them know that the camera was recording standard time and not daylight time (just discovered.) So most times are an hour later than reported if we're talking daylight time.

Amazing process. Far more complicated than I expected. In Wyoming, you called, they were called, people delt with it.... Not so here.

Anticipate being cursed at once he is served.

It's absolutely not easy or pleasant to deal with this. Sounds like the deputies are helpful though.

When did you move from wyoming? I must be forgetting stuff (stuff!)

This stinks. Neighbor problems are never any fun. You don't want them to be enemies but how can you help it sometimes? We still don't talk to ours. Our house is on the market so maybe we will be moving soon.

Left Wyoming for Arkansas in 2001. Moved from Arkansas in 2013. So left Wyoming almost 16 years ago.
(Have I been on the boards forever???)

As to what I've titled "Fun and Games with Scott and Joanne" --- he was cursing at the top of his lungs at about 9:30 or 10:30 yesterday morning - I was 200 feet from the road and further from their property. Thought this was in response to him being served but maybe not. Dogs were loose again last night and good neighbors report him screaming again last night. (I missed that.) So he might have been cursing out his mother (he's 40 something, mother is 69 and a separate piece of work)- hard to tell because the language is the same...

Guess I need to talk to the deputies and see if he has been served and what needs to happen so far as the dogs continuing to be loose.

This is taking too much of my time.

Okay, I had your current state confused, my bad, I have it now smile

It is taking too much time. They sound unstable - do you have any reason to fear them? I am dealing with an unstable person right now. So far, we feel we don't have to worry, but my sense is that could change.

I had neighbor/dog issues long ago, though different in nature. It's NO fun.

Hi Lisa,
I have about 10 pages on the computer documenting the downhill slide of this outfit. Alcoholic surviving spouse of an alcoholic with adult child of alcoholics living in a travel trailer on 5 acres adjoining the main 8 acres with house. House houses surviving alcoholic spouse. Got worse sense the man died. (and I had been led to believe he was the real piece of work...) Couldn't sell it as a soap opera or bad novel because it is too far out there. Sort of like all the police gazette/true romance mags I read as a kid when I was babysitting rolled into one. Would be funny except that it is tragic.
He's a convicted felon and cannot have guns. I think he's smart enough not to do physical harm because he is interested in staying out of jail. The woman is a danger on the road but may have lost her "new" car as I haven't seen it recently.

Go pro would be fun in other instances such as dog training. (What is it they see when they track? How do I look to my dog when she is focusing on me? What is it that she looks at instead of me?) However, this may all be taken care of. He appears to be back to working on a fence.

If they all give up and move, the neighbors will have one hell of a party.

For better than a year before the man died, several of us had hoped that they would sell the place before they died because we were interested in having the sons live far away. They've been out here for something like 30 - 40 years.

Unfortunately for me, the dogs have been loose again. I will call the sheriff tomorrow to find out if I should file another complaint. I'll also be asking when does a loud domestic fight = cause to call in about a domestic disturbance.

There does seem to be progress on the fence. Frustrating though that he doesn't take it seriously enough to contain the dogs in the meantime.

Update on my very own across the street right there drama ..

One dog a problem still But speculation that the son may be in jail. The last any of us heard from him was his cursing a woman other than his mother or me accompanied by stuff being slammed around. I know that is not a long term solution but I am intent on enjoying it while I can.

Thanks. I need it.

Son is still absent and so are those two dogs. Another dog on the property is getting worse - kept a worker in his car both last week and today. Sheriff's department is on it. I filed a complaint Friday and called in today about the problem growing worse.
What I could gather from the SD is that the woman he swore at (these are screamed at the top of his lungs) filed a complaint on him. That must be why he took off with his dogs. I do know that his court date occurs the end of August.

The son's a piece of work but the entire outfit stinks.

I bet you can't wait until the end of August. Best of luck, hope the son is long gone and doesn't return.

Thanks for the good wishes. I doubt he is gone. I think he owns those 5 acres now, has the travel trailer rather rocked in and likely no where else to go. he has little income, few resources.

Update on Jr. Bird Man across the road....

Contesting the charges so I will need to go to court October 6.

Tonight I spent at least 3 hours compiling my list & photographs. It needs editing as it would eat at least one printer cartridge - 39 pages of it 37 of them prints in color...

He will pay for this crap. So will the other yeahoo --- dog has accosted at least 5 people, some on more than one occasion. I just hope that with me showing up with 10 ton of documentation the judge fines him heavily and accesses him court costs.

The dogs will be contained. Sonny boy can push his head further up his posterior and accumulate more fines. I am not stopping....

I'm glad that you're going to get your day in court. With all you (and other neighbors) have gone through with this miserable dog management, surely you will get justice.

I don't want to derail your thread, but your experience really makes me value our considerate neighbors.

Good luck on Oct 6.

Thanks for the good wishes. We'll see how this goes (it's 3 weeks out)

The fool could have just admitted it instead of forcing me to court. It's blatantly obvious his dogs are not confined to his property and harass mine. me, other people. I'm hoping his lack of judgement causes his fine to escalate. smile

Ironically, Wyoming was the easiest place to deal with getting dogs confined. That was likely due to serious incidents that occurred in the boom that happened a few years before I got there. Call about a loose dog giving you problems, the people were responsive, the dogs were confined. Wham! just like that. Here, it's far from that simple.

Update time on the drama out west...

Our day in Court - today. Deputy was in a suit (or sports coat) & I didn't recognize him out of uniform. I was somewhat concerned the neighbor had somehow retained a lawyer!!!

Anyway, I presented my case - 4 pages of dates that the incidents occurred. Including not the most extreme but bad enough language. I also handed over many photographs and indicated that I had more if the court wished them. Neighbor tried to argue that he had no idea the dogs were a problem -- The judge suggested that his cursing me indicated that he did recognize the dogs were a problem. She also admonished him that anyone should be able to walk down that road and I certainly had a right to walk on my property. He was given a rather hefty fine and told that it would be suspended until which time his dogs were again off his property when it would be reinstated. The other party was also heard about his dog being loose. That party did not appear and was given a lesser fine.

I bought ice cream to celebrate. (and other junk too but hey)

Let's hope that the fear of a large fine hanging over his head makes him keep his dogs under control.

Celebrate the victory.

Thanks for all the support but....

Well, that didn't last! approximately 50 hours of no dogs loose. 6:10 PM today that was gone. Dog charged the fence barking. Came across the road, up to my fence running, barking etc. Sigh. Call in. Citation will be done Thursday early. (Deputy on night duty tonight & busy - then off.) I'm hoping that the fine will be reinstated without me having to go to court.

And I didn't have my camera. As I left the house I had thought how nice it was not to have to take it with me..............

I was afraid that he wasn't going to take it seriously. I am sure his male ego thought he got one over on you.

Yeah, well, again last night which the dogs were called back accompanied with cursing them and cursing me. (judge will be so happy to hear) Then this morning three dogs charge the fence. Photographed last night and this morning. Getting ready to walk again...

I suspect that once he blew it, he knew it was over in that the fine would be reimposed. I wonder if he has considered that the judge may increase the fine for subsequent violations?

I really dislike this. I mean California is burning, some fool killed a large number of people, there are storms in the SE and I have to worry about the joker across the street...

Ironically, we do not have room in our jail (new one is being built having gotten an overwhelming approval of a bond measure) for him or I'm sure he would be there for lack of paying fines already.

Sheriff's deputies (2!) came out this morning, took the report and attempted to serve the citation. Had a discussion regarding what the fine was in opposition to just paying the citation -- much more if you contest it. Especially if you don't have any basis for contesting it. So watch that. The guy escalated the threats yesterday morning so I am going to file a restraining order on him. That means he cannot come within 150 feet of me. If I walk the road, he needs to move to the back of his property. He cannot talk to me (and that includes he cannot scream profanities at me.) So I am anxious to get that in place. If I weren't headed down the hill to practice in the first snow of the season, I would have done it by now.

Here's the latest - got the restraining order today. The judge was not happy to be dealing with the boy again so soon. Got it so he has to use a different street to access his property - he can't drive along the one that fronts my place but needs to use the other one. My neighbors owe me for that one.

It hasn't been served yet - he will get the citation on his dogs and the restraining order served at the same time. Any noise from him & he goes to jail. That ought to cool him off for a bit.

Middle, be careful. I'm somewhat concerned for the safety of you and your dogs.

I admire how you have taken care of all that has been going on.

Thanks for the kudus.

Got a call from the deputy. (Hey this guy is good) Neighbor (40 yo) has been served - with citation for dogs and restraining order - of course he is not exactly happy but, ya know, his actions have not made me happy. All the authorities in the county (OK it's a big county with a small population) know this family and especially this one. The recent thing is that his 70 yo mother (who is also my neighbor) got arrested for robbery and spent a couple of weeks in lock up.

My thoughts are: If you let jerks intimidate you, they will continue to intimidate you and others. Not good. (I think that is part of what has happened with my neighbor) My mother's "Ignore them and they will go away" is not an effective strategy. On top of that, it had to be done because a neighbor routinely screaming curses at me is not acceptable. And stress producing. So it had to stop. This is the vehicle I have to shut it down. I am happy to have it although frustrated to learn, despite what I was told, that I could have shut it down months ago.

I think I am OK because he cannot near my property or me without going to jail for it - and they will take him in. He might ignore fines but the thoughts are he does not want to go back to jail.

I am glad you have protection in the sense of him going to jail. Really sucks that over is not quite over.

And wow, what a winning family. I am toying around with what I want to do when I retire in about 7 years. Not sure I have the guts to move, but sucks to think you might find a great spot and then have to deal with stuff like this.

I'm with you though, you have to stand up to the bullies. Just be careful. When we had dog neighbor wars here, I really worried about my dogs. But we were all fine and luckily they eventually moved. Sure wish yours would move too!

Well, yes, a winning family. In this long stream of dialog about the situation, I failed to "share" with "all y'all" that during the two weeks or so of quiet up here the woman (now 70) was in jail for robbery or attempted robbery. There's more, of course to this wackiness but hey!

Hopefully, I'll get the paperwork straightened out tomorrow and quiet will persist. Yesterday was good although I wasn't home much.

SHeesh! More irrationality decends!! It was quiet for sooo long (maybe all of two weeks)-- but he's baaack! It wasn't him or likely not him anyway but his buddy most likely - twilight after a short horse ride around the property - walking the dogs. Dog from across the road charges my fence while being urgently called "Dennis! Come!" We all know how that goes. Too dark to see which dog it is but.....I am Confronted with "I'll ask you nicely What are you doing?" repeated when I don't answer. Thinking to myself, you jerk, what does it look like? "I'm walking my fence line " I get accused of antagonizing "our dogs" and a bunch of blabber about my property, my fence must have a hole in it, he'll fix it for me if I'll show him where, I must want the dogs on my property or I'd fix my fence.... All pretty unhinged since his property is across the road from mine, my dogs are on my property, these dogs charge across the road from their property to mine, etc. Sigh.
Now I'll admit that I was awakened at 3 something AM this morning from equipment trying to move something across the street. I was awakened because I could here it from inside with my windows closed and BTE 2nd wanted me to know something weird was going on. Thanks. Both to the dog and the neighbor.

If the situation weren't tragic and threatening, it would be humorous. A detective got in touch with me today (phone tag) The neighbor tried to accuse me of stealing his dog. ... The detective knows this is silly as he has his dog, I do not. Neighbor also wanted me restricted from walking on parts of my property and walking on sections of the road that runs in front of my property (between our properties). The detective told him that he could not do that but that the neighbor was prohibited from using the road. The neighbor was not happy with that response. ... But I am. wink!
