HI all! Gracie's sleep cycles seem to be off the past few days. When this originally happened we started her on 3mg of melatonin. She started sleeping through the night. After a couple months had to up it to 5mg for her to sleep through the night. Now she's been up at night again, she sleeps a couple hours then thinks it's time to get up/go out/eat breakfast along with a lot of whining during the day and not sleeping during the day. LOL I'm exhausted! She's staring at walls more, licking the air or herself for no reason (no medical reason, not nauseous), whining a ton (again, no medical reason, no pain). She eats 4 small meals a day due to tummy issues so she's not hungry. Any suggestions? I texted my chief of staff and we're increasing increasing the melatonin to twice a day. I really do not want to use the prescription old dog meds. She's already on vetmedin and enalapril (dilated cardiomyopathy) and proin (urinary incontinence). Even with her getting me up at least twice a night, I still love this girl like there's no tomorrow. Any other thoughts or suggestions?

In March she had this weird eye swelling thing, thought it was a tooth. Did dental, xrays, nasal xrays, ultrasound of eyes...fearing it was a brain tumor (thank god I work for a veterinarian). Sent her pictures and reports to several specialists. Did 2 weeks of Clavamox and the mystery swelling went away. This girl loves to give me gray hair!!!

Gracie looks amazing wub Not sure I have a lot of helpful advise but Shoshi is almost 13 so they are both beautiful seniors. Not long ago I noticed I'd awake in the middle of the night to find Shoshi panting. Of course I checked her out medically and thankfully nothing is wrong. What I've done is try to set up her sleep area so that if she does wake up hopefully she will relax and go back to sleep.

I have a fan set on low that blows air to one area where she sleeps. She can either take advantage of the cooler air or not, its up to her. I have nightlights now which I think helps everyone if they wake up in the dark. I also purchased a sound machine. We walk to the ocean everyday so I thought the sound of the ocean would be soothing for her if she were to awake at night. I also have a lavender filled pillow under her bed that I hope she finds soothing.

Shoshi doesn't wake me up ready to go like Gracie does, but I did want to make sure she's comfy if she does wake up. I know she's suffered from the loss of Shiloh and think she may be waking up feeling stressed. So far I think she's happy with the arraignment.

I also feed my pups several smaller meals each day. I can't help but to think this is better for their blood sugars especially as they age. I can't help you with the feeding stuff, Shoshi has me well trained to stand there and talk to her while she eats. Otherwise she will just walk away.

Gracie is still such a pretty girl! I don't want to scare you, but staring at the wall, sleep issues, and whining for no reason can be symptoms of Canine Cognitive Disorder (CCD). Does she ever get really scared at night, try to squeeze into small spaces, pace a lot, or act like she's listening for something? Heidi has had CCD for about three years, but we've kept it at bay pretty well with Cholodin, a supplement that helps brain function. She still sometimes has periods where she gets scared and has problems sleeping, but for the most part, she's doing very well.

I hope Gracie doesn't have this, but if she does, there are quite a few supplements, medications, etc., that can help.

Yes it's most likely this. Why we're trying the melatonin. She does pace a lot at night, but increasing the melatonin helped last night. I'm monitoring with my chief of staff (I manage a vet clinic) how she's doing. Right now I want to stay away from another prescription. I"ve looked at analpryl.

Just an FYI..Cholodin is not a prescription. It is all natural, replenishing the brain and nerves with things no longer produced as well by older dogs.

It gave Skye a wonderful life her last few years. Somewhere here there is post where I listed the ingredients and Skye's behaviors as it helped.

I bought it in Amazon and made sure to never run out. My 17 year old golden gets it, as will any senior dog I will have in the future. It is really good for them.

Another vote for Cholodin, I used to buy it for Sean through KV Vet Supply: https://www.kvsupply.com/Search.aspx?query=Cholodin

I can relate to what Gracie and you are going through. I had the same experience(s) with Sean and also left night lights on throughout the house. Since we live in a two story house and Sean started having difficulty climbing stairs I would sleep in the family room on the first floor. He would pace constantly at night and go to the back door to be let out but nine times out of ten never did anything, i.e. he would circle the yard, come back in and then act like he had to go out again. The Cholodin was helpful, not a cure but definitely helped.

Thinking of you and sending special thoughts to both of you. hugging

And yet another vote for Cholodin, it helped my senior with canine cognitive disorder through her last couple years with less anxiety. It did improve her symptoms of restlessness at night and pacing aimlessly, it also lessened her whining somewhat. It wasn't a cure all, but when I tried taking her off it (during a time when she was having a bizarre skin reaction & we were trying to figure out the cause) she got significantly worse.
It's definitely worth trying and is not a prescription med. but a natural supplement.
