Hi I am doing 1cup beef and 3c rice, he is doing fine. if I do oatmeal is the ratio the same: 1c beef and 3c cooked oatmeal? The only reason why I am asking is b/c oatmeal has fiber and rice doesn't.

I've always used rice, not oatmeal. I did a quick search and it doesn't sound like you should feed large quantities of oatmeal. Maybe a tablespoon a day. I know for a fact that rice works with an upset tummy, and I would mix with chicken as it's gentler on the tummy than beef. This is just based on my experience with my dogs. I don't even pretend to be an expert on food! smile

Hi Kris, Vonn is doing better with the beef and rice, today he had firms stools, then little softer stool. Right after I feed him my husband came home and he gets sooo excited to see him he runs all over the place and I know that's not good after they eat. So I am wondering if the end of his stool was mushy b/c of that?
Again thank you everyone for all your help.

His stool got mushy again with mucus, after vigoursly running. the vet took a stool sample to get it checked out. Does this happen after a lot of exercise?

My female Cheyenne use to do the loose stools after exercise. Think of how you would react by having a big meal and then go running.

He didn't run after eating, it was hours after eating.

Some dogs can get loose stools after exercising. My Aodhán used to get loose stools after a long hike. But it would not persist, i.e. the next time she had to go it was fine.

I was reading the other day (peer-reviewed journal article) that (strenuous?) exercise after eating actually increases gut inflammation and cause gut permeability (aka leaky gut). From our experience with dogs, that makes sense. But if that happens, to me that signals a gut that needs attention because it doesn't have much reserves under stress.
