I have been feeding Earthborn for several years now and Z does really well on it...better than Taste of the Wild.

But a few nights ago, he needed urgent trips out every two hours...a total of 3 trips, for explosive GI business. I had to work the next day and he slept in his (open) crate all day. (Dad was here to let him out, if needed)

Then last night, he vomited 3 times. His dinner had not fully digested the first 2 times, and the 3rd, I didn't turn on a nearby light to see it well enough to know.

I am hoping this is the end of his ickies. Not real sure just what is causing this sudden bout of upset. Could be that I added Earthborns treats, but he has done well on them for several months, until this. I am going to withhold them for a few days to give his GI time to settle down and see if that's been the culprit.

Other than this, he has remained active enough, loves to play when the neighbor dog finds a way into our yard, loves a daily game of fetch with wubba's, and has only cut one lap from our walks at the park. We could both stand to be more active and lose a few pounds... blush but otherwise he is healthy other than this flare up.

I hope he gets back to normal.

Just a few things for thought:
1. Some times for no reason a dog will not do well on the same food he/she has been eating.

2. Hopefully Earthborn hasn't changed the formula, if they change they have like some crazy time of I think up to six months to change the ingredients on the packaging.

Thanks Val! I think he will be fine. we didn't play today to try to prevent his tummy from being all jostled about. I figure a day of rest wont kill him. I did not know they had so long to change the ingredient list on the packaging. Good info!

You can sometimes get a bad bag of food, particularly suspect if you recently opened a new bag.

Thanks Lisa!

This bag is about half gone and this is the first sign of GI issues, so I suspect it was just a bug, so to speak. We didn't do anything yesterday but relax, and had no incidents so I am pretty sure he is feeling better. Will be out and about today though, so it could be quite telling!

I hope Zisso is feeling better.

If I get a bit of a bug, I just go with it and no big worry. When my dogs did the same, I worried a lot. Comes with loving them and being their protectors, I'm sure.

Hopefully things are now looking up.

Thanks Ladies!

Everything seems to be better. He did spit up some bile last night, but he is only eating once a day lately. Not sure if his food is just not suiting his taste, or if he isn't as hungry due to less activity lately. I have looked his food over and it seems to be fine...not moldy, doesn't smell bad, etc. Might be in need of a change to the fish formula next time.

The trips to the park have been okay, but he shortened it up considerably, from 3 laps to 2, and now just one. I always let him be the one to 'say' when enough is enough because I don't want to push him and cause him additional aches and pains. He is 10 and slowing down quite a bit, even losing his enthusiasm for playing with wubbas in the yard, in that he walks more than he runs.

I will definitely be keeping a close eye on him! And I am the same as you, Bonnie. I can come down with a bug and it's no big deal, but I worry myself to death when Z is not feeling well.

It definitely sounds like he is having some gut issues.

I agree, Lisa. He was really off. Yesterday afternoon he perked up and played a good game of fetch, but he has cut himself down to one cup of food a day and I have to be nearby watching or he won't eat that. I cut the treats out for several days and now only give 2 a a time. They spark his interest in food. I think now it is just a watch and see period. He doesn't seem uncomfortable in any other way. I am keeping a log of when his gut acts up.

Bev, this is a long shot, but having just gone through this with my mom's dog I'll throw it out her.

If Zisso has not had a stim test to check for Addison Disease, please ask for that. It is a very undiagnosed disease because vets tend to go for treating the gut or stating it is IBD.

Mom's dog has had gut problems for years, with episodes occurring every couple of months. Recently it was growing closer.

She had diarrhea, vomiting, loss of appetite and weakness as well as behavioral changes. She went from a happy dog to a fearful, hiding dog.

Her blood work always came back perfect, right down the middle except low glucose and low electolytes.

Finally last week she had an after hours episode with bright red (fresh) blood in her vomit and her stool. Her gums were white and she had lost more weight. The vet sad she had a nagging suspicion she was seeing addisons.

We treated the symptoms and scheduled the stim test. Normal cortisol levels should fall between 6 and 12. Here initial draw was 0.5. They gave her an injection which should have put her in the normal range, but her second draw was only 2.6.

Definitely Addison. She got an injection and tapering oral dose of steroids.

She was a different dog by the time we got home. For the first time in months she followed me around and even jumped into my lap.

That was Thursday, today is Saturday and she's eating well and very active. She will continue to get a monthly injection for treatment.

Sorry the post is so long, but you might want to consider the test. Addison disease is the opposite of cushings that is more often tested and diagnosed. Most often it isn't considered unless the dog comes in flat out, in coma.

Good luck whatever is going on with Z.
