Siena was eleven last October. I realized with her being my first dog, I better get looking into caring for a senior. She was still such a puppy and very active. In December she started having trouble with her hips (both good and bad ones) and had gone lame, but she was on the mend when she fell ill on March 30, and she crossed the rainbow bridge that evening. We had mere hours to say goodbye, but we were with her as she passed. I know so many others have been there. And some will be there sooner than they'd like.

This picture was taken Christmas Day 2017. She always loved Christmas (and being weighed on the scale).

I had suspected a UTI and that's why I took her in to the vet. I always try not to worry, but with her lifetime of health issues, but it was difficult. All signs point to hemangiosarcoma on her spleen, which ruptured and she had substantial internal bleeding. We are absolutely heartbroken. She was my shadow and best buddy for the past 6 years while I worked from home and got my dog training business going.

I have wanted to reach out to her breeder for years, but never thought it was appropriate (because I mainly wanted to complain about her health), but I reached out and all I got was "We have many pups from (her Sire) progeny every year and am happy to say they seem to be very happy, healthy and achieving monumental levels of training and awards...." Now I wish I wouldn't have because her comment made me angry on top of everything else :|

RIP Siena Rose

I'm pretty sure her hip surgery at 3.5 years is documented here somewhere... that was about 2010 I think, about the time this board got started. I kind of dropped off for a while, but I still check stuff out, just wasn't posting. I hope I can stay here... not entirely sure my next dog will be a GSD. We got unlucky with Siena's health and that scares me... plus when it mattered most, she was too big for me to lift alone and getting her to the vet that fateful day will haunt me for a while. I struggled. Got it done, but I had no clue what to do with 65 pounds of dead weight frown

We lost Aodhán to hemangiosarcoma almost 7 years ago and both my husband and I still feel the loss to this day.

Diana, please feel free to stay. Heck if the owner of the forum (me) doesn't have a GSD any more then how or why would I say you aren't welcome. You are welcome and no matter what breed you get we want pictures and updates. You can read about my new dog Neilla Neilla's Journey

After 5 GSD's I needed a different breed. I still adore GSD's and I have some GSD Breeders that are Facebook Friends.

Diana,

My heart is with you. On Mar 30, we had to let Mars go after his hemangiosarcoma spread to his brain. He was himself but his body didn't comply. Mars collapsed when David was out of town-I only got Mars (95lb) to the hospital because two vet technicians came to help me.

We can only thank the Lord for the precious years we had with such magnificent creatures.

David and I want to find another GSD-but not tomorrow or the next day...

You have my heartfelt sympathy for the loss of that beautiful blooming soul.

Rest in peace, Siena Rose.

Mary Jane

Oh No, Mary Jane. On the same day. Maybe Siena and Mars are hanging out together now. Pain free and enjoying themselves. Sometimes that's the only way to be at peace with this. I'm so very sorry for your loss too. That's kind of scary, the similarities for that day. I felt very helpless.
