I am so sorry to hear this frown
I know you love her so dearly and she loves you, and you will do everything you can that is best for Indy. She knows you are doing all you can... she can sense it I am sure. I hope you both have a peaceful day hanging out and that her gagging lets up. Tears for you and Indy.

All ideas are welcome, this is Indy we are talking about wub

I have been told that the heartworms would show up on her heart ultrasound. She is on HW preventative (I know, no guarantees!)

Kathy, I hope for that too. Thank you Shawn hugging

The most important observations are the following:

1.Keep an eye on the gums; they should be pink. If they get very red or white, along with listlessness, call us and take the dog to the vet: the dog may have a secondary infection (red gums) or anemia/shock (white gums) and need quick intervention.

2.Pay close attention to combination of lethargy, increased respiration, restlessness, and coughing; if you note these symptoms after treatment, call us and take the dog to the clinic. She will probably be put on Prednisone and will respond quickly.

3.Watch for vomiting or any bloody discharge combined with listlessness, fever, rapid breathing/heart rate, and pale gums. Although extremely rare, also watch for hindquarter paralysis and urinary incontinence. With the symptoms in (3), which are life-threatening, the dog goes immediately to the nearest HSS Clinic because the signs point to embolism (worm clot from the die-off of the parasites during treatment); the doctors will keep her overnight, possibly a couple of days or even a week, put her on IV to hydrate her, sometimes oxygen if she's in distress, and give her cortisone injections to break up the clot. We will assist with all decisions for treatments in the clinics and cover the medical expenses.

Oh Lisa, I am deeply sorry to hear this. If she has a brain tumor and it's large, she might have a severe headache, too, from the pressure. Poor, poor, sweet old dog. And you, just as much. hugging

Many years ago, after I had to let my heart dog go at thirteen and a half years, someone said to me that I was a fool to keep attaching myself to animal friends as their lives are so much shorter than ours. It wasn't exactly the most sensitive remark one could make in the situation, ..., but it stuck. Since then, I've teamed up with several other dogs and cats, aware of the screaming pain that inevitably awaits me at an end that will most likely come before my own. Our lives are infinitely richer for being with them, even with the knowledge that their lives are so much shorter than ours.

We do our very best to recognize the time when a dog or cat suffers without reasonable chance of improvement. It is an honest situation, we are fortunate that no law requires an animal to stay at a hospital with feeding tubes stuck in and drugged to unconsciousness to stop the pain.

I personally choose to ask my vets for their perspective on chances of improvement and quality of life, ask them to be straightforward about it, and I listen to them carefully. Ultimately I am accountable to my dog and her well being and dignity. I never saw any meaning in the end, neither for my animals nor for me, that life is finite is just the way life is.

I wish you strength, and may the deep love you have for your dog carry both of you through this difficult time and guide your decisions wisely. You are not alone hugging
