Grand Champion - 08/07/17 05:32 PM

This weekend, Risa competed in canine freestyle (her favorite sport) for the last time. She had two spectacular performances and earned her Veteran Grand Championship in RFE musical freestyle. It was a whirlwind weekend of emotions (since I also hosted the event) but one I won't soon forget.

Risa is my project dog. Fearful and dog reactive. . .she should never have been a sport dog. She then blew a disc in her back last year and I wasn't even sure she'd get back in the ring. She's earned five titles since.

She could probably do this forever but I'm starting to see more signs of her age and thought it would be best to let her go out on top rather than when she told me she'd had enough.

Thanks for everything, Risa. If not for you, I wouldn't be so dedicated to dog training or canine freestyle. I owe you so much. Thank you. Enjoy your well-deserved retirement from competition (you're still welcome to play any time!).

Ah what a great photo. You look so very happy and Risa is more "oh shucks it was nothing"

Congrats to the both of you for a remarkable job.

And for setting a great example for what can happen with the right combination of handler and dog.

She was actually just really tired. Didn't want to cooperate for the photos at all. wink It was a long weekend for her even though I took her home at lunchtime on Saturday so she could rest and the show Sunday ended around 1, it was a long weekend for my old dog.

Thank you, all. I do have video. Just working on getting it uploaded and then I will share.

Jamie,

It has been such a treat to see videos of you and Risa-it really makes clear what a devoted owner can bring out, even in a project dog. Truly, your videos together were inspiring.

Thanks, all. It's been a rollercoaster of a ride with her but I wouldn't change it for the world.

Here's video of Saturday's performance:

And her final performance on Sunday:
