Subject: 4 GSD's at Douglas...1 senior prob urgent

Hey...can you remind me of our GSD contacts? Or possibly get the word out on Emma especially if you think it's worth it...Cindy thinks she'll be on the euth list Tues as she's so pitiful.

Emma 0792 - 10+ yrs, stray, extremely overgrown nails, VERY matted, hard to walk with mats and nails...and probably some hip issues. She is so sweet. Avail as of today...

Thanks for any contacts you can send me....

Myamom, don't let that stop you. I am sure a volunteer could also put her on the transport north. In fact the vol. told me it is no extra trouble.

I have a very soft spot for the seniors, but have no room since I adopted Griff (then Duke) from the other board. However, I would be happy to provide a generous donation to an approved rescue for care, boarding, etc.--anything to get her to safety.

Re: Douglasville,GA Senior LH EMMA-BAD SHAPE - 02/24/10 11:53 AM

"She is in terrible condition. Her back legs splay out to the sides which you can see a little in the one pic from last night. With help, she can get herself going enough to walk outside a short distance and go to the bathroom. The poor old soul is actually house trained. She balances on her front legs to potty.

I will be transporting her this morning and Molly will come and pick her up to take her directly to the vet. A vet will have to trim the nails. They are extremely long and cause her to walk on her ankles... when she can walk... due to her hips. When they grew, they grew out straight for the most part instead of curling under. I guess this is a good thing.
She is so sweet, fragile and extremely heartbreaking. I had to take large cutters and cut the old flea collar off her last night. It had been on her neck for years. I trimmed a few of the large hanging mats off but there is not much else I can do. I don't want to hurt her in any way. "

Re: Douglasville,GA Senior LH EMMA-BAD SHAPE - 02/24/10 12:07 PM

I'm in tears seeing these pictures. If she wasn't so far away I would gladly provide respite care for her where she would be loved and cherished each of her remaining days. I pray that with some food, lots of love and a little Vet care she can pull through all this. Again, words can't express enough my graditute to Molly for helping her and going that extra mile to at least give this girl a chance. PLEASE keep us posted.

Just wanted everyone to know I got an email from Molly. Emma is at the Vets where she will be for a few days. She is very frail but getting the care she needs. I guess a lot of her coat will need to be shaved off but I still think she will look wonderful. Lets keep her in our thoughts and prayers. Molly mentioned getting some new pics on Saturday, so stay tuned.

Re: Douglasville,GA Senior LH EMMA-BAD SHAPE - 02/26/10 04:56 PM

Emma is doing ok, she isn't eating much as the vet wanted so they gave her an appetite stimulus and she did eat some. I'm sure Molly will be cooking some of her yummy specials for her. She will go home with Molly tomorrow.
Posted by: Shilohsmom

Re: Douglasville,GA Senior LH EMMA-BAD SHAPE - 02/26/10 05:58 PM

Great! That means she is going home with Molly right on schedule...that has to be a good sign. Sounds like they are right on top of things at this Vet too so thats great news as well. Let us know if you hear anything else. And thanks so much for the update!!!!

Re: Douglasville,GA Senior LH EMMA-BAD SHAPE - 02/27/10 07:56 PM

TISSUE ALERT

From Molly:

The Vet gave her one last bath this morning. They did a great job just shaving out the mats and leaving her with a coat for the cold weather. You can see from the photo's how splayed out her poor old hips are but she is as sweet as sweet can be.

She has very little appetite but I will work on that. She has developed a cough that is very worrisome because she is so severely HW positive.

During our lunch meeting everyone stopped and gave her the meat from our sandwiches which she loved! I don't really know how much time she has but I do know that because a lot of people cared about her that the time she does have left will be filled with love and dignity. You can see it in her face on the ride home with Maggie! Head up all the way - just watching what was going on.

Re: Douglasville,GA Senior LH EMMA-BAD SHAPE - 02/27/10 08:05 PM

Thanks for the tissue alert warning. Oh my, these pictures are priceless. The Vets did a wonderful job at getting those awful mats out and saving what they could of her coat.

Love hearing how she enjoyed the trip home...what a dear sweet soul.

I could wait no longer today and ended up calling Molly for an update. I'm so very thankful that they are together, can't think of a better place for this little lady to be.

Just a quick update - Emma has KC which is not a good thing given her emaciated state because she doesn't want to eat.

I have a pot of chicken and rice in the slow cooker hoping the smell will entice her if her nose isn't too stuffy and she did eat about 1/4 lb. of a satin ball for breakfast.

Started her on antibiotics. Right now she is sleeping in the sun in my dining room - she has a down blanket around her to keep her body temp up and when Atticus and one of the pups had a disagreement over a milkbone Grandma Emma actually got to her feet and tottered down the hall!

I almost feel like she is missing someone - I would bet that she had a senior owner that passed and the kids dumped her.

I'm hoping she has had a restful day and is able to get her strength back. She remains in my thoughts and prayers.

Once a Queen, always a Queen. Even in her weaken state she still feels the need to keep her Royal Court in order. She is something else.

Hugs for Emma,

Re: Douglasville,GA Senior LH EMMA-BAD SHAPE - 03/02/10 11:12 AM

Baby Doll is still hanging in there! Her KC seems a little less but her breathing is still very labored between the KC and the HW.

She had a breakfast of 3 scrambled eggs and 1/2 satin ball so her belly is slowly expanding to take in more food and for the first time she climbed up on her doggy bed!

So far so good.

quick update - the Vet was here this morning to check on her - even with all our snow! She does have KC but so far it has not progressed into pneumonia - she has severe HW and also a heart murmur - she is literally skin, bones and ligaments and he was just a little bit hopeful that if we can get her over the KC and get some weight on her to build muscle mass her mobility might get better.

She does need your prayers - she doesn't have much to fight with but she is fighting with everything she has.

Re: Douglasville,GA Senior LH EMMA-BAD SHAPE - 03/05/10 12:14 PM

I spoke with Molly last night and our girl is just doing great. Molly asked that I post a question in the Health section so please take a moment to go over there and offer any feedback you have on that. But back to Emma. Beef Baby food is one of her fav things to eat....I think Molly said she can put away several cans a day of it. She's also eating Chicken and Rice and still loves Deli Meat.

Her spirits are good and each day seems to bring improvement. You might recall her bed is in front of a large mirror and she just loves to look at herself. Not too clear at this point if she thinks its another dog or if she just enjoys admiring herself but she clearly loves the look at her reflection in the mirror!

We have no idea how long she will be with us but its pretty clear by now this little girl is a fighter. I think deep inside her heart she knows she's found a good thing and she's fighting with all she's got to hold on to it and enjoy the love she now feels.

"she loves to look at herself all the time in the dining room mirror that you can see the corner of in the pic.

When she is outside and has finished going to the bathroom, she goes to the back steps and stands there waiting for someone to pick her up and take her in."

"Emma continues to improve a little each day. This morning she ate almost 3 scrambled eggs with chicken breast chopped up in them. She even tried to munch on a Milk Bone a little. Her teeth seem to be in better condition than expected and her appetite is getting better. She is clearly a fighter and has not given up on life yet."

Thanks for the update. That little lady is one heck of a fighter. I tend to think this is the best times this little girl has even known and she's not about to give up on the good times that easy!

"Grandma Emma continues to do well. She is definitely gaining weight because she is a little more difficult to pick up. She was offered kibble instead of her usual meal of scrambled eggs, beef baby food, chicken and satin balls..She was highly insulted."

Re: Douglasville,GA Senior LH EMMA-BAD SHAPE - 03/20/10 11:59 PM

It's been touch and go for a few days now - she is on Carafate for the nausea and upchucking and I am giving her metronidazole for the bloody diarrhea - she actually barked at me tonight because I was late with her dinner so I am taking that as a good sign.

Re: Douglasville,GA Senior LH EMMA-BAD SHAPE - 03/21/10 09:00 PM

Dinner tonight:

3 scrambled eggs
2 chicken sausages
1/2 baked sweet potato

ate it all with gusto - keeping her on the carafate - seems to be helping.

Re: Douglasville,GA Senior LH EMMA-BAD SHAPE - 04/11/10 01:29 PM

Emma is one tough old bird with a HUGE personality! She is over the diarrhea and vomiting - slowly trucks her way around the yard - barks at me when I am late with her breakfast or dinner and is devouring her meals. Anywhere from 4 - 6 cups of cooked chicken and rice everyday with lots of milkbones thrown in.

She is always very sweet and gives kisses and licks my hands and arms as a Thank You as well.

Thanks to all that have cared and wished her well!

I had the pleasure of seeing Emma again last weekend. Hard to believe she is the same dog. She is enjoying life again.
