Water Consumption, not drinking enough

Water Consumption, not drinking enough - 02/12/18 02:30 PM

OK, Neilla doesn't drink enough water. She is probably about 70 lbs and only consumes about 8 ozs a water a day and that is only because I add it to her food.

She loves to eat snow.

I have tried Ice Cubes, no interest there.

I added some low sodium beef broth to her water, no interest there.

Any idea's?????

According to what I have read a dog should drink 1/2 oz - 1 oz per pound of body weight. So for Neilla that would be 35 - 70 oz 4 1/3 cups to 8 3/4 cups of water a day.

You've tried most of my tricks but wanted to add.... my pups drink more the fresher the water is. So I change the water several times each day which seems to do the trick.

Another idea is one of those fountains. I've read that helps them drink more but haven't tried it myself.

Maybe she's taking in so much snow that she's not really thirsty otherwise??? If you try ice cubes you might want to freeze a small treat inside so its sure to keep her attention.

I'm also thinking it would be normal to not drink as much in the Winter as it would be the rest of the year.

You might try changing the water bowl. Maybe theres something she don't like about the one you have now. Just a long shot. Also try having more than one water bowl so that its handy for her. She's a big girl, maybe having an elevated bowl would help too.

Can't wait to hear what others suggest. Keep us posted!

Just checking to see how our girls water consumption is doing?

Re: Water Consumption, not drinking enough - 02/13/18 08:09 PM

I already change her water 3 - 4 times a day to keep it fresh and cold.

I added less than a teaspoon of Gragg's raw vinegar to her water and she drank about 2 cups yesterday.

Today she is just eating snow. I have both plain water and vinegar water in bowls and she just looks at them.

Still trying to figure some thing out.

Val, I've never tried it with a dog, but I have a cat who won't drink out of anything but a cat fountain. I know they make them for dogs also - might be worth a try??

any interest in a hose?

I've had some who so much prefered eating the stream to the bowl!

obviously not an option if in single digits, but if interested, might like a fountain.

we had one of those years a go for the cats, they liked it.

I had the same problem with indy and never found a good solution. I did homecook for her so I did add a little extra in meals, but it still wasn't enough.

Indy was literally afraid to drink water from a bowl and didn't much like it otherwise. In homeopathy terms, some might say that's a rabies miasm from her shots, but I was never able to affect it much thought her life.

Val, Maybe you need a sno-cone machine? Without the flavoring? Some dogs are freaked by the glitter of stainless and might do better with a pottery bowl.

On the fountain - I'm not sure which dog this was - I think BTY 1 - I got one of those waterers that used a 2 litter bottle. One dog loved it, the other was spooked when it bubbled at her (kind belchy thing).

Another thought - what's your water source? Maybe filtering the water, or maybe she wants "bottled" water. That sounds like a joke but it's not meant as one.

Middle, I am confused by this one.

She eats out of a Stainless Steel Flat Bowl. We are putting a cup of water in her food 2 times a day otherwise she is constipated.

I have tried varies size and shapes of Stainless Steel, I have tried 2 different size Corelle bowls.

Monday I am going to buy a couple plastic bowls in different sizes.

We are on Well water, I am thinking she might be use to City water. The other day I noticed she walked up to the water bowl sniffed and walked away.

I made some apple juice today and put some in her water she drank part of it. But I have to be careful because of the sugar in Apples.

If I have to I will get some smelly water from my mom. I lived in that town and I couldn't even brush my teeth with the water, I had to have filtered. I have even thought about bottled water.

Update

Apple Juice in water, drank once then not again.

She drank some Stinky City Water today. We will see how this goes. If this is the key I will get some City water and mix with our well water decreasing the city water over time.

Do you have a water softener? I do and Skye didn't like the water.

I'm in the county, on a well.

If I got the water from the outside faucets (that did not go through the softener) she loved it.

I kept a jug filled in the fridge for her.

We have softened water but we have a faucet in the kitchen that isn't softened. We don't drink or cook with softened water, so that is the water she gets.

So how's Ms Picky doing?

Re: Water Consumption, not drinking enough - 02/22/18 10:07 AM

Didn't drink water other than what I put on her food yesterday. Snow is all gone so she was constipated yesterday.

She did manage to tip a large bowl of water on the floor this morning doing her I am starving dance when I bring her food bowl to the feed spot.

Re: Water Consumption, not drinking enough - 02/22/18 07:55 PM

Oh my gosh, I can't stand when they knock over the water bowl... its always such a mess eek

Could it be that she's getting water other places besides her bowls? You might want to consider a doggie fountain. I understand they drink move moving water than they do water that just stands there.

Today's water consumption update. Since the snow is gone Neilla is drinking a little water (mix with City water and well water, but MUST be cold). Still not where I would like to see her water consumption, but at least she is drinking several times a day.

Re: Water Consumption, not drinking enough - 03/03/18 04:07 PM

As the Lack of Water Consumption Turns.

Neilla doesn't care to drink water in the house. We have now discovered since it is a tad warmer that she likes to drink out of a pail outside. Will bring the same pail inside and she won't touch it. She knows where the water pail is set up now and when we take her out to potty once she is done IF she is thirsty she will head to the water pail and drink.

This girl is defiantly a riddle.

Hi Val,

I don't have any ideas-but I bet you chose a smart dog to challenge you with riddles.

I am sure she is worth the effort,

I had the same problem with Indy. I never got her to drink enough...

Re: Water Consumption, not drinking enough - 03/23/18 10:46 AM

Neilla is drinking water but only outside in a pail and the water has to be cold. she is getting 4 - 6 big drinks a day so we will just make sure that she continues to drink.

thanks for checking in on us.
